How do we know this? We know because we are able to compare the existing copies of Mark’s gospel to one another - and when we do, we find that the very earliest copies (the oldest ones) do not contain these words. It’s also clear from notations in the copies that DO contain it, that the scribes who copied them knew there was some kind of dispute or “problem” related to the inclusion of verses 9-20. So how did these verses get into our Bibles? We don’t know for sure, but the best guess of scholars who think the passage is not original to Mark’s writing believe
