On this week's episode of the Northeast Newscast intern Corbin Smith interviews rising Northeast High School senior Aiven Wooden and his coach Dwayne Lindsey. This last track season, Aiven earned male co-conference athlete of the year and became the Vikings’ first state track and field athlete in almost 10 years. Aiven competed in the long jump at the MSHSAA Class 4 Track and Field State Championships. Coach Lindsey also earned conference honors with a co-coach of the year award in just his second year of coaching and helped Aiven to his historic season.

On this week's episode we're joined by two professionals from Truman Medical Centers/University Health as we head into Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. We discuss some of the barriers to care marginalized communities face, and the importance of creating community connections to share their resources and services offered at TMC’s behavioral health programs. As a hospital serving Kansas City’s historically diverse East Side, TMC’s certified mental health professionals are experienced with mental healthcare for Black and brown communities.Shawn Holland is a licensed professional counselor for Truman Behavioral Health, working in Recovery Health Services, a division of Behavioral Health dedicated to treating clients with a dual diagnosis of behavioral health issue and substance abuse disorder. Niki Lee Donawa, Chief Community Relations Officer, heads up the outreach programs.

This week's episode of the Northeast Newscast is part of a series in partnership with the Kansas City Museum.  The Kansas City Museum is preparing to reopen this fall following a multi-million dollar, multi-year renovation. Laura shares how the Community Center has grown in her years there, the addition of Harmony Project KC, and the crucial support they provide their students and families. This week on the Northeast Newscast, we are both celebrating the women who raised us and congratulating those who are graduating from educational institutions in the neighborhood and around the metro. Kansas City University student Paola Candia is graduating from medical school this weekend, and she’s had a long road to get here. She is joining me this week to discuss diversity in medicine and the importance of community in higher education.Paola is graduating on May 8 from Kansas City University’s medical school, and the following day she and her mother are starting their drive to Washington for her residency. They plan on stopping at some national parks on the way, and she said her mom is excited to finally visit the pacific northwest. On this week's episode of the Northeast Newscast, in honor of April being Second Chance Month, and last week, April 26 through April 30 recognized as Re-Entry Week, we are discussing steps the Kansas City Municipal Court is taking. We hear some of the specifics from Judge Corey Carter, who presides over the program. The court is looking to help people leaving jail who have both substance abuse and mental health challenges successfully return to the community with its new KC Second Chance Reentry program.
