James, an executive at Exxon who retired at the age of 58, undertook the challenge of playing the 100 greatest American golf courses as ranked by Golf Digest ... and to do so within one calendar year. The book is about much more than the golf courses; it's about the people he met as he came to reacquaint himself with America itself; it was also the experience of coming to terms with his own childhood, which was marked by severe poverty.
