Do you, Jesus, as a leader of the people, accept our submission to a foreign power? Or should we stand up and fight for our independence? Many people believe that freedom is independence and autonomy. Being in control of your situation. Being able to do what you want without being restricted by others or circumstances. That is what many Jews desired while they were under Roman occupation. But Jesus provides an interesting response to that question: Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's. (Matthew 22:21) He's pretty much saying accept the situation as it is. Pay the taxes. Accept Roman rule. In this sense, Jesus was clear eyed.
