Simon’s research ranges across the modern Atlantic and he is the author of three other books: The Iron Road in the Prairie State, Mother Jones, and British Friendly Societies, 1750–1914. We spoke to Simon about George Pullman’s older brother Albert Benton Pullman and his many contributions to the extraordinary success of the Pullman sleeping car, why Albert’s history was overshadowed and in many cases rewritten by his younger brother George, and the many things we can learn about the Gilded Age by studying how ordinary investors and entrepreneurs like Albert operated during that time.
