The early church was not required to walk in faith in the same way we are. They knew the reality of the life of Jesus, his miracles, death on a cross, burial, and resurrection because they were eye witnesses of these things. Today, we walk by faith through the living Word of God. It is through our utter dependence on God that we perceive spiritual realities.
