When I studied fine arts at university – I struggled with the unspoken tension between 'creating art' and being a commercial artist. It was looked on with distain. When does the artist stop expressing themselves and start reflecting the wants and desires of their audience? It seems like doing anything other than art needs the opposite question posed: When do we stop 'expressing ourselves' and start engaging other people on the journey? Guess what? We need to be the opposite of the classic idea of an artist if we want to create value in the world. Inspiration for today's post are: "Made to Stick" a favourite book of mine by the Heath brothers "Taking Notes vs Taking Belief" one of the all time best posts by Seth Godin. Reminder from last week that my friend Nick is going to Kenya with his youngest daughter as part of the "Kids for Kenya" group. He is raising money to build classrooms, fund six teacher salaries for a year, build water filtration systems, construct homes for widows and their children and fun
