In response to Brown v. Board of Education, Virginia chose massive resistance - schools were closed rather than allow Black and white children to learn together. No school system was more affected than the Prince Edward County, Virginia schools. They were closed for 5 years and more than 2,000 African American children, along with a few white children were denied a formal education.
