  • Ep 239: Being working class! Historian professor Carl Chinn on the class ceiling in the arts and society

    21/08/2024 Duración: 01h22min

You can also enjoy the shorter highlights episode now. History has rarely been kind to the working class. Nor has the arts. Too often, those of us who make it into the creative industry and sustain careers do so despite our background and the class ceiling, not because of it. Professor Carl Chinn grew up in working-class Birmingham, surrounded by family, hearing stories that would prove his inspiration to become a successful historian. His work covers the history of Birmingham, the original peaky blinder gangs, and the urban working class and he earned the honour of MBE while still facing prejudice and skepticism because of his roots. We discuss the sharpened imposter syndrome felt by many working-class people, the ongoing battle for an egalitarian, democratic society that values the energy of the working class, and the role of community spaces in healing the terminal despondency tangible among working people. • HIGHLIGHTS of former Rockstar Games Senior Artist Stephen Bliss in Brooklyn

    30/07/2024 Duración: 33min

(The full-length chat can be heard on episode 70 of 'The Creative Condition'.) Illustrator and artist Stephen Bliss moved to America to take on a job with Rockstar Games. Nobody could have envisioned the explosion of controversy that was the Grand Theft Auto video game series.   I met Stephen in Brooklyn to talk about his journey pre-Rockstar, how it felt to be the man behind the cult video game artwork, and his fascinating new direction since leaving the company.    New York City and its wealth of ripped subway posters have provided the basis for his stunning new large-scale originals and we talk about what it means to feed off the environment around you and why New York is so unique. Creating large-scale street art is something new to Stephen and we talk about breaking away from screens and how he's successfully transitioned to work on buildings. These are fascinating insights from a man who continues to set trends and move forward fast. 'Thumper' is out now on Scout Comics: https://www.scoutcomics.com
