When we look at Jonah's response to God's call to go to Nineveh, we have to answer the question of why Jonah ran away. Why didn't he just tell God no and stay where he was? Why travel all the way to Tarshish? The answer may surprise you. (Text: Jonah 1:1-2)

In 1Samuel 15, the prophet told Saul that God values obedience over sacrifice. In Joshua 7, God told Joshua it wasn’t the time to pray while there was sin in the camp. In other words, sin saps the power from our prayer and blocks them from getting answered. The truth is that oftentimes we are to blame for unanswered prayers. God has told us how to pray and even what to say, but many times, unanswered prayers are due to the fact that we have allowed something to come between us and God. That something is called sin, and it strains our relationship. (Text: James 1:5-8; 4:1-10)

In Matthew 5-7, Jesus introduced the idea of God as our heavenly Father. Never before had this been a concept taught or understood by God’s people. In this passage Jesus uses the term “Father” about 15 times, and He even uses human examples of fatherhood to show us the relationship we can have with Him. Through Jesus’ teaching, we see what the perfect Father looks like so that we may pattern our own lives accordingly. (Text: Matthew 5:44-48)

Why doesn’t God always say YES to our prayers? If God loves us, why doesn’t He give us what we want or need? There are several reasons why God may not answer our prayers the way we want Him to, but ultimately, we must learn to trust God’s judgment over our own and to accept whatever He chooses. Wherever you are is the best place to pray. Whenever you can is the best time to pray. Whatever you're thinking is the best thing to say. There's not one specific way to talk to God, so don't get overwhelmed with what to say to God. Just say something. (Text: Romans 8:26-27)

As Americans on Memorial Day, it is our responsibility and duty to remember what so many did for us and our country and why they did it. We should honor their memory by continuing to preserve what they fought for and by passing it down to next generation. As Christians EVERY day it is our responsibility to remember what Jesus did and to honor Him by living out our faith and by faithfully passing it down to the next generation. It is imperative that American Christians remember and honor those who gave their lives for our freedom, but we must also remember the spiritual slavery from which we were delivered and the Hero who died yet rose again to free us.
