Another year has come and (almost) gone but we've got a couple more episodes for you as we close out 2023. Gojira is one of the most enduring film characters in cinema history. Since first appearing in the 1954 original, everyone's favorite reptilian Kaiju has starred in a total of 38 films and counting. Between Warner Bros. MonsterVerse film franchise and the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters series on Apple TV+, Godzilla is having a bit of a moment right now, again. We've seen a lot of iterations of the guy; the good guy version, the bad guy version, the neutral force of nature, the rubber suits, the bad 90's CGI, cartoons, and lots of dope toys. GODZILLA MINUS ONE is the first period piece in the franchise and the first since the 1954 original to reset the clock and setting back to post-World War 2, and post-atomic holocaust, Japan. Serving as the feature film directorial debut of brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, the movie revolves around a group of teenagers experimenting with a mysterious embalmed hand which allows them to contact, and temporarily be inhabited by, spirits. Greetings idiots! And so it came to pass that beloved King Hans, in his wisdom and discernment, blessed us with a horror relic from the atomic age- 1954's THEM! As stated by the man himself, this was selected to accompany the theatrical release of Oppenheimer, as it relates to the aftermath of all the nuclear testing in New Mexico. Besides that though, it all pairs pretty gooooooood with our prior episode, Starship Troopers, as both involve giant bugs and heavily armed humans shooting at them.  As Warner Bros. highest grossing film of 1954, THEM! was one of this first films of it's kind, and one of the film industry's first attempts to process (and exploit) the anxiety and terror of the atomic age through a fictional lense. Welcome back. How ya been? This episode we’re talking Paul Verhoeven’s gory military satire, STARSHIP TROOPERS. While universally praised for it’s staggering visual effects and creature design courtesy of Phill Tippet, upon initial release the film was considered a commercial and critical failure. The satirical elements were mostly misunderstood and even occasionally interpreted to mean the exact opposite of what was intended. Verhoeven’s hyper-violence and grisly combat scenes were perhaps most appreciated by gorehounds and teenagers. All that being said, over the last 25 years Starship Troopers has undergone a critical reappraisal.  So, how’s the film aged since it’s original 1997 release? Listen and find out.
