We have a problem; our hearts are not centered on God. As a result of not being centered on God there is an infinite discontent and dissatisfaction that our lives have built up with everything. In Numbers 21 we are being shown a correlation of what is happening in Israel’s bodies is exactly what was happening in their souls. We have an unquenchable, all-consuming thirst that will eventually (if there’s not some supernatural intervention in our life) lead us to believe that nothing is good enough. “If there is no judge in the world, there’s no hope for the world, because evil will win. If there is no judge, what hope is there for the world?...[BUT]…If there is a judge, what hope is there for us?” We are hopelessly lost unless there is a judge, and His name is Jesus. In Christ we have a way for God to deal with evil and suffering in the world without wiping us out. We must move our eyes from ourselves to the cross. The type of culture much of the Bible was written in was one that focused upon honor and shame. American culture is what is known as an individualistic culture. An individualistic culture tends to be a right/wrong culture (innocence versus guilt). An honor/shame culture is not focused on an individual, but the community. Right and wrong in both cultures will be viewed differently, but God will use both types of cultures to speak of Himself and draw us to Himself.
