How old were you when you started biking on a regular basis? Andy Lang got into biking at the age of 63 and he hasn’t looked back. Andy is on the podcast today to talk with Murph about his journey as a cyclist, including a terrible bike crash that happened while on RAGBRAI a few years back. With the help of family, friends and some awesome medical professionals, Andy made a full recovery. He is getting close to 70 years old, and has no plans to hang the bikes up. On a bicycle she rode 184 MPH!! Recently she broke another record....a team of 5 women including Denise broke the Women’s World Record in human-powered land speed. Did you know the oldest female BMX racer lives in Iowa? On this episode meet Miss Kittie, who discovered a love of BMX after watching her son race the tracks in Des Moines. At the time she was just turning 40! She is a legend in the sport and has some great stories to share with us, including riding RAGBRAI. On this episode, AP digs deep into history and finds an article to read to us written back in 1974 by Clarence Pickard. Pickard, from Indianola, rode the first RAGBRAI on a 10-speed women’s Schwinn bicycle. He quickly became RAGBRAI famous for taking a wrong turn that first year and ending up riding his bike on Interstate 80, and for his bike riding attire: a pith helmet, long-sleeved shirt, long trousers and tennis shoes. After completing the very first RAGBRAI, he was invited to write an article for the Des Moines Register which he titled Pickard’s Bike Riding Advice. On the podcast today meet Julia Rose who is on to talk about a fall ride full of fun but also full of history. It is a weekend ride coming up September 15-17, 2023 and it is called the Iowa Underground Railroad Ride. It is a fully supported bike ride with just under 70 miles each day. The majority of Underground Railroad activity in Iowa took place in Fremont and Mills counties, where fugitive slaves traveled from western Missouri. Southeastern Iowa also had many fugitive slaves from northeastern Missouri making their way to the Mississippi River and Illinois. Riders will get to tour the historic Todd House in Tabor and also explore the grounds of the Hitchcock House in Lewis.
