24/06/2020 Duración: 01h51minClub Gym Nerd members can watch the podcast being recorded (pre-edits with all the flubs and hiccups) and see video of the routines we discuss. THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW Jennifer Sey became the US national champion in 1986, just seven months after breaking her femur at the 1985 world championships, an injury that led to a change in rules about bars spotting. In 2008, she published her groundbreaking memoir Chalked Up and has since been an advocate for survivors and those fighting against abuse in gymnastics. She produced the documentary Athlete A about the failures of USA Gymnastics to deal with the criminal ex-doctor, which premieres on Netflix this week. We talked with her about what she hopes the general public learns about gymnastics culture from the film, whether the Maggie Haney suspension represents progress or not, why watching Kerri Strug vault in 1996 didn't feel like a glorious moment to her, and balancing the horror of Athlete A with hope by focusing on the triumphs of Maggie Nichols, Rachael Denho

More athletes detail stories of racism in college gymnastics—what Alabama's Tia Kiaku, Auburn gymnasts Kennedy Finister and Telah Black, Florida's Kytra Hunter, and Nebraska's Ashley Lambert said this week Why the aggressively empty platitudes from coaches like Dana Duckworth and Courtney Kupets-Carter bother us so much—and why we love the statement from Sac State Plus, do we need to change our outro? 425: GymCastic Fixes Judging (Commission)
13/05/2020 Duración: 02h10sThis week's episode has been commissioned by an anonymous Club Gym Nerd member and current gymnastics judge who said, "You complain about judging all the time." (WHAT, US??? NEVER!) "Tell us what you would do if you were in charge of women's officials for NCAA and JO meets." We shall gladly oblige! Surprise, surprise, we're not short of opinions. We tackle nasty problem areas like transparency, the Old Girls Network, "reputation," judging consistency, bias, and subjectivity, while answering questions about whether having been a gymnast makes you a better judge, appropriate processes for judge selection and evaluation, and how judges should get the $$$$$$$. We also make a list of the problems with college judging and what to do about them. So basically, we fix everything that's wrong with everything. You're welcome, gymnastics. GYMTERNET NEWS We couldn't not talk about the latest harrowing details on Maggie Haney's 8-year suspension, so we take a moment to be horrified about that as well. BECOME A CLUB GYM NE

419: Sports Economist Dr. David Berri
08/04/2020 Duración: 02h36minHEADLINES MEMMEL: Like a beacon in the darkness, Chellsie Memmel came the closest she has ever come to announcing a comeback by saying she is kind of playing around and maybe training. We proceed to put her on 18 Olympic teams and give her all the world beam gold medals. Not sorry. 418: American Anthem
31/03/2020 Duración: 01h44minAMERICAN ANTHEM The year: 1986 The film: American Anthem The quality: low Spencer and Jessica spend way too long this week on a deep dive into what is perhaps the most significant film in the gymnastics pantheon, teen sports-drama-romance American Anthem. Jessica lovvvveeed this movie as a middle schooler. Spencer hates everything. It's gonna get good. We discuss it all: very excellent gymnast acting, backlit hair and 13-foot-wide denim jackets, THE TRIFFUS OF MURRRDERRR, an 11-week-old Jenny Rowland putting Daniela Silivas to shame, the lovely and sensitive handling of domestic abuse (jk it's monstrous), storing your grips IN THE LEAVES, excessive gymnastics grunting sounds, and the true hero of this story—Becky Cameron. 25/03/2020 Duración: 01h30minNO MORE TOKYO 2020 Via the IOC's longest-serving member, Dick Pound, we learned that the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have been postponed. It's been a long year this month, so Jessica has a list of Dick Pound jokes to get us through. It's most of the episode. After that, we discuss Why it was important to postpone Gymnastics implications Should the new 2021 seniors now become eligible for the Olympics? What code of points should be used? How should the unfinished qualification process be resolved? What of the 2021 world championships in Copenhagen? Which athletes are most affected by this, negatively and positively? 416: Everything Is Canceled
18/03/2020 Duración: 01h30minGYMTERNET NEWS Everything has been canceled. We run through the events that have been canceled thus far (spoiler: it's all of them), and theorize what it might mean for Olympic qualification—if the Olympics actually happen. Note to FIG: We already figured out what you need to do, so just do what we say and you might survive. USAG has canceled events through May 10, but how much oversight does USAG have to tell clubs to stop training and classes? We discuss. Jessica uses the Olympic Spirit as a vehicle to tell people to stop being the absolute worst Spencer's favorite piece of news from the week, a (now-revised and no longer fun) real estate article that assumed Valeri Liukin and Yevgeny Marchenko were a couple.
