The Festival of Lights brings out a new side of Dal Sherandu, with detentions suspended and celebrations running for two full days! Released from a week of disciplinary punishment, Lance heads to the bar to reunite with his friends, and finds that Quercus was not at all discrete in hiding the reasons for his absence to the equally chastened novices. Pimur is dismayed at his companions' lack of knowledge around tailgating before a festival. Don't all parties start with a pint and some fries? A new server at the bar might just be a shy young kid hoping to follow in Rigney's footsteps someday, or may be something more? Games of chance and competition entertain the festival goers, and a few painfully awkward encounters seem like the perfect cap to an evening that ends with the new adults of Malkier being sworn into the ranks of the Golden Crane... but more than Amena's dignity will be ruffled before the sun rises again. While exploring a cave system near the town of Dal Sherandu, intrepid explorers Pimur, Amena, Lance, and Quercus come face to face with a group of "miners". Before tensions can escalate too far, the bossman arrives. To Pimur's dismay, his friend and mentor Andre appears to have been less than forthcoming with all the details about his "day job." Ushered from the caves with a stern injunction to stay away, curiosity gets the better of the party, and they hide near the entrance hoping for more clues into what Andre&Co are up to. They learn a few interesting tidbits, but only by waiting so long that all three of the students get into serious trouble with their respective superiors. Amena and Quercus' first response to finding a trapped bear in the old mine is to help it escape, while Pimur is simply impatient to find an excuse to wield fire or firearms, whichever is messier. Lance anxiously watches the party's backtrail, and admires the usefulness of the One Power. Released from their respective duties at the end of the day, acquaintances Lance, Quercus, Pimur, and Amena gather again in the forest to investigate the tracks of the dogwolves that had previously attacked them. Following the tracks to a nearby mine, the party stumbles into two human guards. A silk handkerchief with an old royal insignia is as intriguing to Amena as the matching well-made pistol is to Pimur, but there is no further sign of canines to be found. In this episode, we continue to meet the new cast of JRWI, seeing how novices Amena and Pimur have gotten used to each other's foibles over months, observing the research goals of the Ogier scholar Quercus, and witnessing the discipline and patience of the Child Lance. The rebellious novices push their curfew to the limit, exactly as Tedric knew they would. A very famous book fuels their imagination for what might be lurking in the night. Quercus settles down after an active day of observing plants and other fascinating non-botanical phenomena in the town. His night is very rudely interrupted by an injured warder stumbling into his camp. Wolf howls echo across the area in the night, but it isn't until morning that Lance receives a missing persons report.

It's been 150 years since the Last Battle, and the world has changed in surprising ways. The Children of the Light are now a force to be respected, stedding are regrowing in the old Blight, and students of the White Tower are no longer cloistered until they acheive the shawl. In the frontier town of Dal Sherandu, a Child of the Light named Lance Akashi is disturbed by news that battles have broken out again in his hometown of Chachin. White Tower novices Pimur and Amena go to the tavern to get a theraputic pint and a gamble after a long day training in use of the Power.
