Big Idea: We desperately need the Holy Spirit living in and through us so we can live like children of God.  Romans 8:14-21 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of Go

Summary Statement: We desperately need the Holy Spirit living in and through us so we can PLEASE GOD.  Romans 8:9-13 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. 12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.   3 Benefits of having the Spirit at Home in you:  IF the Spirit of God is in you, THEN you are not controlled by your flesh (:9 and 13).   IF the Spirit of God is in you, THEN you have resurrected life (:10-11).

Tale of Two Natures.  There are only 2 kinds of people in the world: “according to the flesh” people and “according to the spirit” people.   Big Idea: Living in the spirit begins with a renewed mind.   4 Reasons it Matters Where you ‘Set Your Mind.’    Your life, including your spiritual life, is a product of your thoughts.   Your thoughts will establish lifelong mental patterns.   Every thought has the power to move you toward the Holy Spirit or away from Him.   The outcome of your mindset is either life and peace or becoming God’s enemy and death     How to Set Your Mind on the Things of the Spirit   Tune in to the Spirit’s frequency   Increase your spiritual intake  Dwell on beautiful ideas.   Seek out life-giving conversations with God-loving friends.   Memorize scripture.   Next Steps Pick one of these ideas to practice this week.  Memorize a part of Romans 8 – resources at whoisgrace.com/read  

New Possibilities Mar 12, 2023 | Pastor Mike| Romans 8:3-4    Big Idea: Only with the Holy Spirit can you achieve God’s standard.   Romans 8:3-4 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. The Returning King December 18, 2022 | Pastor Derek | Revelation 19:11-16 What is Jesus Doing Now?   Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father (Col 3:1; Heb 1:3; Mt 26:64; Eph 1:19-22)  Jesus is at work interceding for us. Upside Down Kingdom  November 27, 2022 | Pastor Derek | John 18:36   Big Idea: Jesus’ kingdom upends our definitions of power and success.     About the Kingdom of God.   kingdom = the rule and reign of God over all the earth for all time   It is both ‘here’ and ‘near’ It is misunderstood.    3 Upside Down Kingdom Principles   Winning comes through Dying (Col 2:13-15; Lk 9:23-25)  Power should be used under not over. (Mt 20:25-28)  The least in this world can have the greatest satisfaction (Mt 5:3-12)   You are an Agent of Christ’s Upside-Down Kingdom.   We live in a kingdom tension.   Contented and discontented Being and becoming   Reflection:  What would it look like for you to embody the upside-down kingdom of Jesus in your real world this week?      

DECONSTRUCTING JESUS: The Messiah November 20, 2022 | Pastor Derek | Matthew 16:13-19; Genesis 3:15  Big Idea: Jesus is the victorious Messiah, and his ultimate victory is still to come!   Whispers of the Coming Messiah   Genesis 3:15 - protoevangelium = first gospel   2 Sam 7:13 – Line of David    Isaiah 53:3 – Suffering servant    The Fulfillment of Messiah in Jesus.   Jesus was Born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:4-5)   Jesus declared the kingdom (Mark 1:14, Isaiah 61, Luke 4:18-19)  Jesus Owned his Role as Messiah  Jesus’ Baptism as an Ordination Ceremony (John 1:29; Mark 1:10)  Jesus low-key picked fights with earthly kings (Luke 7:24; 14:31; 13:32-34)   Jesus rode into Jerusalem as the King (Zechariah 9:9)   Jesus received people’s worship (Luke 19:39-40)   Jesus declared he was Messiah from the cross. (Mark 15:34)    Reflection:  What would you need to change if you embraced the fact that Jesus is the true king of your life?  

Big Idea: Every miracle is a sign pointing to Jesus.  Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 20:30-31  4 Types of Miracles: 1. Healing (17) 2. Resuscitation (3) 3. Exorcism (6) 4. Nature (9)  Miracles reveal the identity and mission of Jesus: 1. Jesus is God 2. Jesus is Compassionate 3.
