  • Visionary Americana

    27/06/2019 Duración: 02h21min

Better late than never and we're back with an oversized episode for your Summer listening. This time we talk to four different artists: Andy McLeod, Joseph Allred, Eli Winter, and Jon Camp; about their new records and about their place in and perception of the so-called "American Primitive" school of guitar. We share some of their tunes and then, of course, we spin some good old Grateful Dead. So much new music is covered in this episode, it's a little dizzying. In addition to the great guests, I mentioned the Phil & Friends shows from The Cap that you absolutely should check out. There's also the new Prana Crafter/Tarotplane split LP available here, the Dire Wolves record that you can find here and Jeffery Alexander's solo album that's available here. Andy McLeod's releases can be found at his bandcamp: https://andymcleod.bandcamp.com Joseph Allred's "Nightsongs can be found via bandcamp: https://gardenportal.bandcamp.com/album/nightsongs and his upcoming album "O Meadowlark" can

  • DelFest 2019

    11/06/2019 Duración: 02h14min

I've had a little bit of time to come to grips with the terrific time that was DelFest 2019 and now it's time for me to share with you some thoughts, sounds, and discussions from what was one of my very favorite weekends since... last year's DelFest! This is one of the finest festivals in the land. Everything from the music, to the location, to the crowds in attendance, is just right. We're going to listen to some of the music from the weekend, some interviews that I conducted while I was there, and while this episode is certainly bluegrass-centric, we're still going to get a healthy dose of Grateful Dead...Sort of. We're going to hear from Billy Strings, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Larry Keel Experience, The Travelin' McCourys, Railroad Earth, and The Del McCoury Band. That's just a small sampling of the great music that I saw. I try to run most of them down in the show. After all the DelFest talk, I thought you might like to hear a little Jerry Garcia. In keeping with a popular discussion point from th

  • Cy Dune

    29/05/2019 Duración: 02h11min

Greetings Dead Freaks! Our guest this time is Seth Olinsky who joins us to talk about the latest release from Cy Dune. Seth has released several Cy Dune records since his days in Akron/Family and this one is an archival release of material dating back a number of years. You can acquire "Desert", via Bandcamp at this link. We get into that, his history as a guitar player, his broad range of influences, the origins and possible future of Akron/Family, and, of course Grateful Dead. You can get more information on Seth's releases and possible touring plans via his website https://www.cydune.com as well as via Facebook. This episode comes a little late because I spent last weekend at DelFest. I've a lot to tell and share from that weekend and look forward to putting it all into the next episode. In the meantime, allow me to remind you that the Brokedown Podcast is part of the Osiris Podcast Network. • Chris Forsyth

    30/04/2019 Duración: 01h55min

Greetings, Dead Freaks! This week we go deep with guitar player, Chris Forsyth. We talk about his career up to now, his studies with Television's Richard Lloyd, and Chris' new album on No Quarter Records, All Time Present (available from noquarter.net and bandcamp.) Along the way, we dip into the album for a couple of clips and then spin a full cut after the chat before we get into some Garcia and Grateful Dead jams. The album came out in mid-April, and there are shows on the horizon– including some with previous BdPod guests, Garcia Peoples. Be sure to keep an eye on Chris' website, https://thechrisforsyth.com/, for details. If you dig the album, he's got more. I recommend any of the "Solar Motel Band" records. You can also find some terrific live recordings from our friends over at NYCTaper.com. Scroll down after the jump for a great clip of Chris Forsyth and drummer, Ryan Jewell joining Garcia Peoples for a ripping cover of The Other One. Hey there, Dead Freaks! No real episode this week but you can hear me join Brian and David on Beyond The Pond. This go round they set Phish aside to discuss The Grateful Dead. We take a look at the Dark Star from Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis, MO on 1973-10-30. This Dark Star is deep and groovy and, in true Beyond The Pond fashion, we use it as a springboard to explore other artists and their music. 19/03/2019 Duración: 02h54s

Greetings, Dead Freaks! This go-round we present to you Drew Gardner and Jesse Sheppard who make up the group, Elkhorn. These guys make terrific, improvisational, instrumental music that I think will be well worth your time. They come on and chat at length about their two new albums, Sun Cycle and Elk Jam (both to be released on April 12 via Feeding Tube Records). The conversation inevitably steers toward Grateful Dead and we discuss some of their favorite Dead jams. Along with the conversation, we get to hear a taste from each of their new records, and then we spin some killer Grateful Dead jams. In support of their new records, Elkhorn is hitting the road in April. They're playing a few dates as the head out to the Milwaukee Psych Fest (where they'll join previous Brokedown Pod guests, Dire Wolves and Garcia Peoples) followed by a few more back East. • Three Nights in '73

    05/03/2019 Duración: 01h53min

This go 'round we're looking back forty-six years to March, 1973. The Grateful Dead played three shows at the Nassau Veteran's Memorial on March 15, 16, & 19. These kicked off a short East Coast tour spanning from Boston to Baltimore and really gave them a chance to stretch the fairly new Wake of The Flood material debuted in February of that year. There's not a lot of fooling around on this episode. I run down some highlights from the shows and then play two sets of great tunes. So, sit down or stand up and prepare to get down to some good old Grateful Dead! As mentioned on the show, for a limited time and at reduced prices, you can still grab t-shirts, mugs (travel & otherwise), and stickers over on the Redbubble site. Get them while you can! • 038 - Garcia Peoples

    12/02/2019 Duración: 01h40min

On this edition of BrokedownPod, we have Tom Malach, guitarist from the great band Garcia Peoples, joining us to talk about his band, their upcoming album, Natural Facts (available via Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records), and the Grateful Dead. These young guys bring a fresh ear to the two guitar indie rock sound, bending themes and melodies with a knowledgeable, psychedelic, intent. We've got some live stuff from one of their recent shows after the interview. And after that, some terrific Grateful Dead. Garcia Peoples like to play live and always have shows on deck. Coming up, they hit the road with LA Dead-cover jammers Grateful Shred for a number of shows. • 037 - Winter Tour '79 pt. 2

    05/02/2019 Duración: 01h39min

Welcome back, Dead Freaks! In this episode we return to finish our look at the final shows of Keith and Donna. Winter '79 featured some good music but spotty coverage in the form of soundboard tapes. Fortunately, some of the audience recordings hold up and we even feature one such tape in the show. We've got some first set rockers and second set jammers on the decks. Before we get down with that, we take a few minutes to celebrate the life and voice of Jerry Garcia Band vocalist, Gloria Jones, who passed last week. Joining Jerry's side band in Fall of 1984, she sang with him and for us until Jerry passed. She then carried on with Melvin and Jackie in JGB. Gloria will be missed and fondly remembered forever. We've added some items to the redbubble shop. Additional t-shirts, hoodies, and whatnot can be found there and the prices have been reduced. Why lower prices? Because it's a final blow-out before I close out that shop and move on to the next phase of BrokedownPod merch. What's next, you ask? Who can say? B

We discuss his new album How Long, the role music plays in our lives and world, and his relationship with the music of the Grateful Dead. You can learn more about Steven Graves at his website www.stevengravesmusic.com. There you can grab his albums, check tourdates and more. Check it out! As mentioned on the show (for a change), you can still grab t-shirts, mugs (travel & otherwise), and stickers over on the Redbubble site. • 035 - Winter Tour '79 pt. 1

    08/01/2019 Duración: 01h36min

It's 2019 and my Grateful Dead calendar puts us exactly 40 years out from the final tour with Keith and Donna. In this episode we take the first half of that tour into consideration and spin some jams hot enough to defrost your microbus. So stand up or sit down and enjoy. We've got a bunch of stuff lined up for this upcoming year so please tell your friends, to get on the bus and subscribe so they don't miss a thing! If the holidays have passed you by and you still didn't get that killer shirt from or for your loved one, Brokedown Podcast t-shirts are still available on our Redbubble page. Please consider heading over there to cop a little something. In addition to ladies and men’s shirts, we've got stickers, and things that hold coffee (or tea!) Thanks. • 034 - A Day Between

    27/12/2018 Duración: 01h47min

The year is rapidly closing but here's one more episode before 2019 hits. This one is a look at some of the shows played on 12/27 over the years. We've got Grateful Dead tunes from several eras of the band and some nice jams along with. So ice the bubbly, spike the last of the egg nog and get ready to boogie. I will note, there's one song in the mix that I failed to back-announce. It was sort of a last-minute addition– a bonus track, if you will. Don't let that mix up get you down. I hope you enjoy all of this stuff and look froward to more great stuff to come in the new year. As always, please remember that we have shirts on our redbubble page. Please consider heading over there to cop a little something with our sweet new logo. In addition to ladies and men’s shirts, we've got stickers, and things that hold coffee (or tea!) • 033 - Generational Band

    11/12/2018 Duración: 01h26min

It's December and temperatures may be falling but we've still got hot jams for you. Inspired by a Bob Weir quote in this recent Rolling Stone interview, this episode digs into where Grateful Dead music goes in the next fifty years. We'll check into Dead & Company, Phil & Friends, Keller Williams, Golden Gate Wingmen, and Joe Russo's Almost Dead. Then, we'll spin some terrific Grateful Dead.

  • 032 - Dire Wolves

    27/11/2018 Duración: 01h49min

It's late November and the year is almost gone. In this episode we chat with Jeffrey Alexander of Dire Wolves. They've got a new album out called Paradisiacal Mind which you can grab from Bandcamp or on vinyl from Feeding Tube Records in the US or Cardinal Fuzz in the UK/EU. It's a great trip and worth your time. We dig into the origins of the band and their unique sound before spinning a track from the new album. Then we tap into Jeffrey's past as a deadhead and taper. Naturally we get to talking about shows he saw and that leads us to spin some terrific Grateful Dead. As mentioned on the show (for a change), you can still grab t-shirts, mugs (travel & otherwise), and stickers over on the Redbubble site. • 031 - JGB Fall '93 with Lenny Stubbe

    06/11/2018 Duración: 02h23min

In this episode, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the final Jerry Garcia Band East Coast Tour. In Fall of '93, the JGB played a mess of dates back East (as they say) and a whole lot of fun was had. Our guest, Lenny Stubbe was there in Buffalo (11/5/93) and reports his recollections and overall impressions of the tour. Your host attended a couple of these as well. Naturally, talking about music leads to listening to music and some choice selections from the tour are included for your pleasure. As mentioned on the show, you can still grab t-shirts, mugs (travel & otherwise), and stickers over on the Redbubble site. Order now to be ready for the holidays! • 029 - MSG '90

    09/10/2018 Duración: 02h10min

Hey there, Dead Freaks! It's October and although I'm ready for cooler weather, I'm still into talking about September. Specifically, September 1990. We're looking back to that first run of shows at Madison Square Garden with Vince and Bruce joining the Grateful Dead on the keys. While this era is often maligned, there's great stuff to be heard. In fact, this run has spawned a Dick's Picks (#9) and a Road Trips release! We're combing through what's to bring you some great playing from the dawning of a new era. I completely failed to mention the merch in this episode (AGAIN) so I'll just add here, you can still grab t-shirts, mugs (travel & otherwise), and stickers over on the Redbubble site.
