Sound Designer Peter Albrechtsen is becoming one of our most frequent and favorite guests to have on the Next Best Picture Podcast, and it's easy to see why. If there's any hope that writer-director Sian Heder has for her Sundance-winning film "CODA," it's for her actors to get the recognition they deserve. It's a fair hope that her actors, including deaf performers Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, and Daniel Durant, would receive accolades that so rarely come to performances like these. The Oscar-winning Matlin is one of the rare exceptions, though Heder notes Matlin still hasn't had the career she deserves. "CODA" centers on Ruby, a hearing child of deaf adults, played by newcomer Emilia Jones. Roughly 40% of the film is comprised of ASL, something that brought unique challenges for Heder. In a conversation with Next Best Picture, Heder discusses the missed opportunities she sees when creators avoid casting actors with a disability and why she wants the world to see Troy Kotsur and Daniel Durant as major stars. Releasing from IFC Midnight this weekend, "Demonic" represents many firsts for "District 9" director Neil Blomkamp. It's the first time he's working within the horror genre. "Cryptozoo" is, without a doubt, one of the most unique experiences one is likey to have, not just with animation, but with any film this year. The highly detailed world, creative character designs, and level of imagination needed for a project like this have taken director/writer and producer Jane Samborski many years to bring to life. The film made its debut at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, and now with its theatrical release coming this weekend from Magnolia Pictures. After what has felt like a forever-long delay from its initial release due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 20th Century Studios is finally releasing "Free Guy" in theaters this weekend starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Joe Keery & Taika Waititi. It's been called "The Truman Show" for a new generation, and the result is an enthusiastic, fun, and surprisingly thoughtful social commentary on free will and the imaginary worlds we create for ourselves outside of the real one. That fictional world in this film is "Free City," which required creative world-building and ingenuity to bring to life on the big screen.
