Lesson 1 in the Vital Signs series. There are some vital signs that a church or person reflects to show a real life in Christ. Join us as we visit I John. There is no better way to prepare for the upcoming year (2020) than to check you own vital signs.

It’s the way of Jesus that helps us see the humanity behind this issue of immigration. It’s the way of Jesus which is fueling our own efforts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Thursdays with Hopeworks and FriendSpeak. We want to be a church that approaches this issue in the way of Christ.

Rick Oster will guest teach the final chapter of Colossians in the chapel class this Wednesday (October 30).

Absence makes the heart grow fonder… but not with God. God’s absence is painful. But God is never really absent, his love never stops reaching us. Specifically, for those risen with Christ, we are located with Christ in God. That means we are never alone.

The character, experience, and vision of elders shapes the environment of the church. The biblical passages elevate those three aspects of elders. The biblical passages also point to the contextual needs for elders in different churches. Highland has some specific contextual needs.

Grace (which Chris introduced last weak) and peace are inseparable. Prayer provides peace because it occurs under the banner of God’s grace. As such, it surpasses understanding. Yet, it is available through prayer—when Gods will becomes our will.

Churches fight because they care. The world fights because they care, only they have forgotten why they care. Sometimes the church forgets why as well. But Paul reminds a fighting church that unity comes through Christ. That Christ is the reason we care.

Loneliness makes us weak. People let us down and feel distant, when what we desire most is loyalty and closeness. We can even be lonely with God. All of us need someone who can strengthen our hands in God by pointing to God when we most need it.

Jonah obeys after hearing the word of the Lord a “second time”. We want to be people who obey the Lord the first time. A good impulse, but also a heavy burden. Jonah’s obedience, the second time around, comes not from anxiety but gratitude, an insight given him in prayer. Instead of a burden, the message of Jonah is one of God’s relentless pursuit of each of us (the hound of heaven). The word of the Lord always comes a second time.

We live in a world that is inherently broken by the sin of us against them. We live in a world that is replete with racial injustice, poverty, abuse, and violence. We live in a world, where evil is consistently rising from sin. So in response to this brokenness, God’s call to us is to come close, to get face-to-face with insiders and outsiders alike. Come close to the person or people in our church who lack connection, come close to the person or group of people we believe to be unworthy. Come close and get face-to-face with our neighbors who are made in God’s image.

Jesus loves by sacrifice. That kind of love marks the people of God. Additionally, the people of God extend that love to the rest of the world. Timothy Hill is one of our extensions of God’s love.

Jesus lived and died on a cross. But the reason for the cross is not self-evident. In fact, the cross was scandalous and shameful. Still, the church kept the cross at the center of Christian faith. Why? The cross is the way in which Jesus takes on our shame fully.

Denial of Christ deserves judgement. But all sin is denial of Christ (not the same as saying all sin is equal). For Christians, saved by grace, judgement ensures justice will be done on earth, but also keeps us personally cautious and corporately concerned.

Following Jesus Christ—God’s Son—means not only going up the mountain to witness His glory but entails following Him down to the valley of suffering, death, and (eventual) resurrection.

We ask God to contend for us (He does). Jude asks us to contend for God. Contending for God sometimes includes apologetics and evangelism. But here, contending for God is about our holiness. The standard for our holiness is God’s holiness.
