In a culture that celebrates celebrity stardom, idolizes professional athletes as the best of the best, and constantly pushes for success, perhaps no virtue of God is more forgotten than the virtue of humility. And yet Jesus consistently, continually modeled a different kind of life marked by genuine humility. Yet, while we know humility is important and to be exemplified in our lives we all struggle with practicing such humility. How do we expect “great things” as a church and in our own lives while living lives of humility? What does it mean to live a life of humility? Why is it necessary for a genuine walk with God? We will seek to answer these and other questions as we attempt to pursue a way of life not often traveled by many in our culture, the holy practice of humility.

We will use this theme to kick off the new year as we explore the book of James in its entirety. James is a well-known Biblical book about putting faith into action. People are often anxious to begin the new year “on the right foot” and put resolutions, etc into practice. As a church, we want to begin the year by acting on our faith in Christ. In this sermon series we explore the book of James as a whole, covering one chapter each week. We also will use this series to invite all small groups to study the book of James in a corporate fashion throughout the month of January. In this series we will encourage all small groups to get involved (if they are not already) in some of the key sending activities of the church and in that way, JUST DO IT! Normally when we think of “conspiring” against the world we think espionage and spies and strength and might to fight others to get our own way. However, when Christ conspires against the world He does it in a way to save the world… and He does it in the most unexpected of ways… with the most unusual of “weapons”--through hope, peace, joy, and love. Join us in this sermon series as we move towards the birth of Christ where Christ will move in every way except the way we expected. This Christmas season, expect the unexpected.

In this series we will focus upon the upcoming Vision Initiative with the theme of God’s Vision being Our Future and the call to stewardship this brings. But in doing this we will remind everyone that everything is meant to be spiritual and used for God’s purposes. So as we talk about money and facility improvement and the hiring of people for jobs, etc. we will recognize how these things are indeed spiritual and meant to be used for the glory of God. In many ways we will also explore a theology of money and again seek to understand how something as “slippery” as the usage of money is meant to be spiritual in nature in order to glorify God.
