  • Whoops! I'm a Hypocrite - Alice Shirey

    05/02/2017 Duración: 30min

When Jesus came into the 1st century world as a rabbi, the religious leaders had real problems with him. And Jesus, though he loved the religious leaders, had real problems with them. In fact, in the rare times Jesus got angry, it was almost always with this group called the “Pharisees.” They twisted really good things – like the desire to follow God’s ways, live by his laws, and avoid sin – into beliefs and actions that Jesus found offensive, because they hurt people and pushed them away from God. Today, many who regularly attend church often drift into some of the same patterns of the 1st century religious people. Our beliefs and behaviors end up lacking resemblance to Jesus. We don’t mean to … it just happens. Our teaching series - that we are lightheartedly calling Whoops! is about 4 of these beliefs or behaviors that Christians can find themselves sliding toward despite our best intentions. - Join us as we explore what the Pharisees did that made Jesus angry… - Join us as we think about how Jesus

  • A Time to Trust: Emmanuel, God With Us - Ed Baker

    01/01/2017 Duración: 31min

Since we kicked off the fall with "Risk-Taking Faith" as our theme for the Gathering, for Advent we are focusing on the "risk" that ordinary human beings took (or failed to take) as they trusted God to play their part in the coming of the Messiah. Mary took a huge risk in trusting God to be the mother of Jesus, the irreligious Magi took a huge risk to follow the star to find the Promised One, Simeon took the risk of waiting his whole life in the temple for the one he knew God would send, and King Herod, rarely explored in teaching, refused to take the risk to believe that God was God and he was not. We will explore each person’s story as we walk through the Scriptural account of Jesus’ coming. We will then challenge ourselves to ponder the risks God might be asking each of us to take during the Advent season - for some, the risk to believe for the first time, for others, the risk to love in hard circumstances, the risk to let Jesus be King over all of our life, the risk to believe God when he asks hard thin

  • Money Stories - Dave Bartlett

    20/11/2016 Duración: 29min

Each of us has in our heart and head our story of money. Jesus told many stories about money. Because of its importance in our lives, money was one of his most taught topics. As our teachers disclose their own evolving stories about money they will also focus upon some of the stories Jesus had to tell. The goal of this series is that many of us would re-examine our own stories of money and maybe bring our stories more in alignment with the message of Jesus. Jesus said in John 10: 10, “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” A part of this “life to the full” that Jesus wants for us is an accurate story of our money because our story of money affects almost every part of our lives.

In today’s broken world - many things threaten to hold us captive and keep us from living an abundant life of faith. God can sometimes seem distant or absent. In the Old Testament book of Daniel, we read about a young man of faith who was held hostage for 70 years in an evil empire that seemed completely devoid of God. His story encourages us and demonstrates how choosing trust, faith, humility, wisdom, and hope can help us not just survive, but thrive in a broken world. • The Risk to Belong: It’s About the Kingdom! - Brian Steenhoek

    25/09/2016 Duración: 27min

We were created to belong to God and to other people. If we miss this, we miss everything. The need to belong, to be a part of something bigger than ourselves, is hardwired into the human DNA. Where does this desire come from? We believe it comes from the truth that we were created by a God who is at his core, a community - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We were created out of community for community. Our deep need to belong displays this truth. God is at work to create for himself a community through whom he can bless a broken world; that community is his church; God’s people.. We will live in community with God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - and with each other, for all eternity. Belonging is our destiny! But in our individualistic and noisy world, true community is hard to find. The truth is, we must initiate it; it will rarely just happen. As followers of Jesus, we must seek community as a primary calling of our faith. But not just any old “community,” it must be community in the way of Jesus, which me
