If You Want to Create, Stop Being an Artist
28/06/2016 Duración: 05minWhen I studied fine arts at university – I struggled with the unspoken tension between 'creating art' and being a commercial artist. It was looked on with distain. When does the artist stop expressing themselves and start reflecting the wants and desires of their audience? It seems like doing anything other than art needs the opposite question posed: When do we stop 'expressing ourselves' and start engaging other people on the journey? Guess what? We need to be the opposite of the classic idea of an artist if we want to create value in the world. Inspiration for today's post are: "Made to Stick" a favourite book of mine by the Heath brothers "Taking Notes vs Taking Belief" one of the all time best posts by Seth Godin. Reminder from last week that my friend Nick is going to Kenya with his youngest daughter as part of the "Kids for Kenya" group. He is raising money to build classrooms, fund six teacher salaries for a year, build water filtration systems, construct homes for widows and their children and fun

The neuroscience behind why you can't ride two horses with one arse
22/06/2016 Duración: 05minOk, so I heard the saying and I fell in love with it. We live in a world where trying to do two (or more) things at once is normal. Can we multitask or is this lovely saying actually true? Let's check the neuroscience… Reference for today's post is "The Brain that Changes Itself" by Norman Doidge MD So it happens that Nick, the wonderful friend that told me the saying that inspired today's post, is going to Kenya with his youngest daughter on a life-changing trip… As part of the "Kids for Kenya" group he is raising money to build classrooms, fund six teacher salaries for a year, build water filtration systems, construct homes for widows and their children and fund a medical clinic for the community. They have paid their own travel expenses so all donations go directly to the villages they are helping. I would really appreciate you donating. Please click on their fundraising link below. Anything you are able to contribute will be impactful and gratefully received. https://www.crowdrise.com/kids-for-kenya

Sick of being misunderstood? Unlearn your expertise!
15/06/2016 Duración: 07minHow do you beat a psychological bias that affects how you communicate? With another psychological bias of course! "Anyone who wants to lift the curse of knowledge must first appreciate what a devilish curse it is. Like a drunk who is too impaired to realise that he is too impaired to drive, we do not notice the curse because the curse prevents us from noticing it." – a great article by Steven Pinker. It's close cousin is The Dunning–Kruger effect. The "Expert's Dilemma" is the stage of 'transition' that manifests in the Dunning-Kruger effect between 'unskilled' and 'highly skilled'. 07/06/2016 Duración: 10minhttps://thinking.school/blog/environment-is-attitude/ What is the right environment for you to do your best, most meaningful work? In your own quiet space? Should you care about the way things look? Do we need to have play things in our office? Should we be trying to look professional? Can you do great work when you are not given a play space? It all comes from within: it's about your attitude. Psychological Safety vs Open Resilience
31/05/2016 Duración: 08minDo you hold back your ideas? Do you avoid asking questions? This week we are talking about the idea of Psychological Safety. How do we create a workplace where we have that kind of emotional freedom to take risks together? What are some parallels from the playground at school? Anyone who has gone to school can tell you that is not a Psychologically Safe environment! So what is the alternative to Psychological Safety? Resilience. Watch today's video, to understand the dangers of resilience and the concept behind 'Open Resilience" and how it works in environments that might not have a culture of Psychological Safety yet. How can you make a difference? As a leader – or as someone in (or working with) an organisation that is not there yet.
