  • CHUGBOAT - Dusty Futon SOCAL 6-17

    20/07/2018 Duración: 53min

Party band CHUGBOAT return to the Dusty Futon with BRAND NEW Material...and a new sound?  Well...it's more refined, and "more of a mature" sound...so they say. This gaggle of goofs are reworking their sound (just a bit) but we can still sense the party vibe and the innuendos.  Even if they ARE less direct than “Papaya”.  These guys are veterans of the Dusty Futon and have come back with THREE BRAND NEW TRACKS for you to peruse.  We play one that you’ve NEVER HEARD OF and some of the singles they’ve already released.  Listen as the guys talk about the tracks and even sing along to the backing vocals.  We have fun talking about their versatility of instrumentation and their dedication to their craft.  These guys just love to perform.  We get word about how they’re experience lends them to believe Vinyl is the only physical recording medium left worth putting out.  Of course, digital is the key…listen to why they believe that.  It may help you save a few bucks…  Follow them at chugboat.com or @chugboat anywhere

  • The Rough - Dusty Futon SOCAL 6-16

    14/07/2018 Duración: 47min

The Rough joins us on The Dusty Futon and Big Jon FINALLY gets to chat with Jules Whelpton, #ThatBlondeBassist.  This girl is a riot!  Jules and Darren join us ON TIME, and Drew got caught in traffic…so, it takes a few before we get to the tunes since he’s the one bringing them in.  Interesting side-note about Darren…he’s the drummer for the band, and he became a drummer by accident!  He’s freaking amazing on the skins and we almost never heard from him!  Jules is one helluva musician herself.  Starting on Violin and moving all over any stringed instrument, at least any instrument with a G-string.    Drew finally shows up with the tunes and we get to hear some badass music from this 3-piece Rock/Punk/Alternative band.  #IAMDREWSMITH Since it was so late in the episode, we decided to power through these songs and play them practically back-to-back.  It was worth the wait though.  While Jules isn’t in any of those tracks, she plays them live, sings background, and will be “all over” the next album they drop…whi

  • League of Liars - Dusty Futon SOCAL 6-15

    07/07/2018 Duración: 53min

Sppike, Rumble T, and Maestro Mike of the League of Liars join us on the Futon to debut a few of their tracks. They have a debut album coming out an d want to chat about it...and THEN some!  Sppike is spelled with to p's and he's one of the players in the Spice Girls / Sex Pistols tribute band, Spice Pistols.  That gimmick aside, fellow "Spice Pistol" Michael Fairchild "aka Maestro" (self declared) fronts this amalgamation of music.  League of liars might not be telling the truth, but they claim to have inspirations from all different styles and genres of music...well, that's an easy one to believe... The three "liars" share three of their songs with us, from their debut album with a working title "$5 demo for $10" (not sure if that's a lie), and some stories along the way.  We also get a tidbit from Sppike on Arthritis and aging rockers...it's a valuable one too! Follow them for all their shows on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/leagueofliars/  We are not just a podcast, we are a platform dedicated to th

  • Ricky Garcia - Dusty Futon Producers Corner 1-05

    02/07/2018 Duración: 43min

19 Year Old Ricky Garcia may just have an old sole to go along with that soulful voice. His Rhythm and Blues voice lends itself to multiple genres as he moves his way through trials and errors…mostly trials…and mostly successful. He's been playing music since fourth grade and started actually focusing on it when a friend uploaded a video of him singing, against his will. It got attention...and he liked that he could reach people. This kid is incredibly humble, and schools all three of us (Spicy, Tyler, and Big Jon) on how he writes music HIS way! Speaking of School...he's a student still, working on a Criminal Justice degree. Big Jon gets hung up on his production software, FLStudios (formerly Fruity Loops), and can't seem to think about anything else, but we do play two of his soulful tracks.  One more R&B and the other a little different. Take a listen to his episode and then find this kid on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3AWuOU81eZzM4AeKNWIxJn?si=k8wDi4zvQ7W18oc7YCYJUg  We are not just a pod

  • Taz Taylor BAND - Dusty Futon SOCAL 6-14

    29/06/2018 Duración: 54min

Taz Taylor insists it's the "Taz Taylor Band" and that he can't do it alone. This mainly Instrumental group is a heavy-hitting hard rock band who shares their music here on The Dusty Futon!  We chat about how they've been around since 2004, with Val Trainer (Drummer) joining in 2006.   Taz is a London transplant who came to San Diego with very little and worked hard to put out an album, playing nearly all the instruments himself on "Caffeine Racer." Moving forward, he's a four-piece ensemble that features vocalist Chandler Mogel from time-to-time.  And other famous guest musicians...Taz and Val love to name-drop, in an extremely grateful and humble way.  Listen to a few of their tracks in this episode and follow them at taztaylor.com! • Chelsea Scott - Dusty Futon Producers Corner 1-04

    26/06/2018 Duración: 01h28min

Chelsea Scott of Second Story Studios lets us interview him and use his studio! We ended up talking for almost FOUR HOURS, but condensed it down to around an hour for you. Want to hear some of the extra stuff?  Check it out on our Patreon page...the only place to get behind-the-scenes content from the Dusty Futon.  www.patreon.com/thedustyfuton Chelsea starts out right away giving out props to other tenants at the building where Second Story Studios is located, right after Dirty talks him up with multiple accolades.  We had already been talking for two hours before we "officially" started the episode, and we covered everything from Chelsea's imitation of Dave Grohl in the tribute band Faux Fighters to Cognitive Psychology and Alien-con.  Dirty and Chelsea work together at this studio, and recently had an artists who goes by "Gallie" record in studio.  We preview her track #DearMonday and talk about what takes to be an entertainer in this current industry. Chelsea grills Dirty for some more backstory that we d

  • The Rock - Dusty Futon SOCAL 06-13

    22/06/2018 Duración: 49min

Old School rock with a heavy kick can describe what The Rock brings to the table. Two former cover band artists going it on their own and running for 30 years!  The guys dish about their early years and working with A&M records while really wanting to get Atlantic Records...what happened?  You have to listen to find out... Speaking of listening...we debut a BRAND NEW TRACK (actually...two of them) from their newest album.  The guys open up about the meaning behind some of them and talk about the collaborative effect of the fortunate four-some.  We also get to hear their recount of landing that gig with Jack Russell's Great White on June 9th.  A great history of the Great White band and why Jack's name is now on it... • Calour Creative - Dusty Futon Producers Corner 1-03

    19/06/2018 Duración: 45min

Calour Creative produces more than just music, and we talk about why they call themselves an "Independent Talent Group." They brought with them a Myriad of clothing and accessories they design, create and produce themselves. You can see all their "Not merch" clothing line on their website: www.wearecalour.com They have a very unique take on their "talent" and how to portray. All of them are fresh out of high school and ready to make this their lives, and did so while still in school.  We start off by talking about a previous project called "Pretty Colors" and go into a brand new project called "Camp Sad Boy."  These guys are very creative.  Check out their new project on their website...make sure to buy the gear when it's out!  You might miss it... • Brett Ellis Band - Dusty Futon SOCAL 6-12

    16/06/2018 Duración: 51min

Two-Thirds of the Brett Ellis (namesake included) showed up to sit on the futon today, but the third member was there in spirit!  Calvin and Brett spoke for Rick many times, making us realize (as they "enlighten us") that he didn't need to be here...as long as he shows up to the shows.  Brett and Calvin take us on a journey through the old Blues and Jazz days, reminiscing of the early days of "fusion," and talking plenty about it.  Their most recent album was their first-ever LIVE album (after decades of writing and performing), amid over a dozen of other available albums.   Brett and Calvin brought with them the first release of the master for (what might be) the title track off of their forthcoming album..."The Enemy Within."  BRACE YOURSELVES...these guys don't want you to have dry seats when they're done with you...that first hit's a doozy...YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!!! • Raul iRok Rios - Dusty Futon Producer Corner SOCAL 1-02

    11/06/2018 Duración: 56min

Raul iRok Rios is an underground DJ turned Producer who "likes to music" and tells us that and MORE in this episode of the Producers Corner.  We get to learn about the four elements of the Hip-Hop Culture...something Big Jon had no idea about.  Tagging, Dancing, DJ, and Rapping...and Raul shares his personal experience with these and how it led him down the producing path.   We talk about the difference between Remixing and Covering a song after listening to his new project's, Avenue 44, REMIX of "White Walls," a Gabriel & Dresden original.  While still unsure what to call this style, Raul and Dirty BOTH school Big Jon on the fact that there are multiple sub-genre's of EDM...much like Rock!  When asked whether he has a plan when he sits down, Raul simply states "I just press buttons."  Of course...that's with years of experience and knowing what those "buttons" do! Make sure to check this guy out!  Just search his name "Raul iRok Rios." We are not just a podcast, we are a platform dedicated to the advance

  • Avenue Army - Dusty Futon SOCAL 6-11

    08/06/2018 Duración: 49min

Max and Travis of Avenue Army join guest host Lindsay and Spicy Kim to catch up and talk touring!  Lindsay is on loan to us from touring band Cold to talk with her friends from Minnesota.  St. Paul specifically...don't confuse it with Minneapolis, or Max's tattoo artist might get upset.  Max started writing songs at the cool age of 11, less than 2 years after picking up the guitar, and brought the band to San Diego only a few years ago. Lindsay has history of playing with these guys (and Spicy's husband) and she instantly fell in love with their style and music.  We get a chance to listen to some of their songs AND...we get a LIVE PERFORMANCE of a BRAND NEW SONG called "Back to Rehab."  You don't want to miss that.  Although, Big Jon's "on-the-fly" engineering might be somewhat amiss. We cover so many topics from finding new bandmates on Craigslist (or at Wells Fargo) to comparing America's Got Talent to The Running Man, but the most important part is the music...and you wont be disappointed as Lindsay wastes

  • King Shem - Dusty Futon Producers Corner SOCAL 1-01

    04/06/2018 Duración: 51min

King Shem is a multi-talented artist from the Boston area (specifically Brockton, MA) who has transplanted himself in the San Diego scene.  His decades of experience have given him an extremely wide set of skills in making his music.  We spend the first 5 or 6 minutes of the episode talking about sampling, something Big Jon isn’t very familiar with; however, new host Dirty Disciple happens to be somewhat of an expert in that field.  No matter…King Shem takes it upon himself to just share his deep coffers of knowledge with the Dusty Futon audience!   It’s almost too much information…but, if you’re new to producing or writing, it’s very valuable.  King Shem started humbly making bootleg tapes, using samples, off of a dual-cassette deck and has moved up to making his own loops and beats, using inspiration FROM other tracks.  Apparently, country isn’t an exclusion as he shows up wearing a Taylor Swift t-shirt.  We talk all over the board in this episode, and learn how his new album, currently titled Black Hesher

  • Nightshadow - Dusty Futon SOCAL 6-10

    01/06/2018 Duración: 47min

San Diego POWER METAL band rocks so hard Tyler starts sweating!  Nick has been working on this band since 2012, writing tunes and looking for other players.  Good things come to those who wait, and three drummers later they have their mix!  This up-and-coming group recently won a Brick by Brick competition for the Wacken Metal Battle USA, establishing themselves in the scene.  They love playing there...and Brick loves having them! Tyler's puns may be awful; however, the shredding of the guitars isn't!  It's so good that at the end of the episode, Tyler dares Nick to play a slide whistle solo, while Chris plays the "bass flute."  We track 3 of their songs in full, Battle Cry, Children of the Night, and Mistress of the Pit.  We sample a bit of Anthem for the slide whistle solo, but you have to buy their EP on iTunes to hear the whole thing! Follow these guys on facebook at Nightshadowmetal and Reverbnation! We are not just a podcast, we are a platform dedicated to the advancement of the Local Music Scene - and

  • Bunch of Heathens - Dusty Futon SOCAL 6-09

    30/05/2018 Duración: 52min

A couple of Bunch of Heathens seems like bad english, but it's what we have on the Futon today! Wes and Ryan from Bunch of Heathens joins us...Wes is a TRUE NEWB when it comes to guitars, so dont judge too harshly.  This guy has only been playing for a few years and already has his own sound.  Tyler jumps in to stop Spicy and Big Jon from ruining the story of why the act of picking up an axe happened to this Veteran of our Armed Forces.  Stumbling through gigging and getting his sound out there, he met Ryan and G, and the rest will be history...(the band's only been around for less than a year).  Ryan and G are incredible musicians backing up this brand new guitarist, helping him along the way...the way a band should be! We check out three of their demo tracks, which you can buy at their live shows, and chat with them about the intensity of their music.  It's a great talk about being inspired to play, no matter the age, and just going for it. Follow then all over Social Media, Reverbnation, and Soundcloud! We

  • Vokab Kompany - Dusty Futon SOCAL 6-08

    28/05/2018 Duración: 50min

Richard Galiguis (We can't seem to pronounce it right) of Vokab Kompany and AOA takes a seat to talk the progression of his musik styles.  Make sure when spelling anything from this band, you replace the "C's" with "K's" ...it's kind of their thing.  Richard is a Bass player now; however, he didn't start that way...he filled in as bass for one band then again for Vokab and ended up heading the Rhythm section.  Oh yeah, the guy even plays drums...the big three!  His AOA roots prove that, and we even play one of their tracks... Vokab Kompany's album "The Good Kompany Album" is a step in a new direction for the rocker.  Dropping the guitar from the lineup added a new dimension, as he explains.  We talk about the different Fusion's happening with Rock, and the addition to backing tracks and synths in music.  They've even added a live sax player to the mix...speaking of MIX, this album has a TON of credits to guests musicians and producers who helped in making this album crack for your ears, including Whitney Meye

  • Southern Reign - Dusty Futon SOCAL 6-07

    25/05/2018 Duración: 01h07min

Southern Rock in Southern California seems rather fitting if you think about, and these guys have it deep in their soul. A few of these guys are leftovers from the tribute band Skynyrd's Innyrds. This brand new band out of San Diego has their foothold already in place thanks to the members' legacies.  Their first CD is coming out on May 26th and the CD Release party will be epic! We play three of their tracks form the new CD and talk about all sorts of manner of things.  Of course, we talk about all the members (after multiple mic checks...); however, we also end up trading mic's between members as they pass a "starbucks" around the room. Trevor's humble beginnings are no match for his rockstar guitar playing.  Lead vocals with a unique twang that takes you just below the Mason/Dixon line and into swampland and a demeanor of a puppy, this guy will melt your hearty and your ears.  Their first CD isn't even out yet and they have a full-length video (shot and edited by the band) for one of the tracks, "Life Aint

  • May RIde Recap - MAY RIDE SPECIAL E04 - Dusty Futon SOCAL

    25/05/2018 Duración: 11min

We had so much fun setting up and doing LIVE Recordings with musicians and fans! Thank you to Clint August and Biggs Harley-Davidson for having us!  As with every year since it's inception over 16 years ago, the May Ride has raised money for the troops of San Diego and their families with the blood sweat and tears of volunteers who believe in what they do.  We were proud to share the stage with others who volunteered their time and energy to making it a successful event. We hope to see you there next year!  It's always at Biggs' and it's always on Armed Forces Day in May.  Next year, it's Saturday May 18th...and you can bet we will be there.  Set your calendars now! • Vicious Phishes - MAY RIDE SPECIAL E03 - Dusty Futon SOCAL

    24/05/2018 Duración: 17min

The Ever-evolving and developing Vicious Phishes join us after their 3-piece performance at May Ride.  We just can't wait to finally connect with these guys and finally hear in depth about their band.  We touched on their formation and even found the connection (Trinity...it's always Trinity) to May Ride...Daniel!  We love Daniel! It seemed that we spent more time talking about The Rock, but we didn't want to spoil their future episode either....yeah, that sounds good! Let's go with that...  The band has been evolving through multiple different "pieces" in the bands, including four guitarists at one point, and they continue to change.  Although, Trinity is stuck in the VHS days...and we find out her favorite movie of all time...at least on VHS. • The Rock San Diego - MAY RIDE SPECIAL E02- Dusty Futon SOCAL

    22/05/2018 Duración: 16min

4-piece Rockers 'The Rock' join us following their performance at The May Ride!  Even though they will be on a future full-length episode, we just had to chat with them about what was going on in front of them while they were SLAYING it on stage!  Stunt bikes, bouncing fans, shaking the stage...it was crazy fun!  We found out that a couple of the members have a connection to the military, including Danny's father being a waist-gunner during WWII!   A big shoutout is given to Howie from Biggs Harley Davidson and a few spectators stopped by, including a solid fan of these guys...but you'll have to wait to hear that in the May Ride RECAP episode on Thursday!  The bagpipes kicked in and made it hard to focus, and it kicked off a discussion on Kilts...and undoubtably played a roll in the number of sign-off's we attempted.
