CTS_ep 95 The Love Witch
15/08/2017 Duración: 01h28minEpisode 95 is about "The Love Witch” (2016), a visual feast of a movie that will put you in mind of the colorful 1960’s. Yeah, Love Witch, baby! But first, your hosts will have a good bit to say about what they’ve watched since last episode. Richard saw “The Circle” (2017) and suggests just watching it if your head is already pointed at it. Better than that was “The Devil’s Candy” (2015), which may be the subject of an upcoming show. Jolyon saw an early Marilyn Monroe movie and “Don’t Go in the Woods”, a Summer slasher from 1981 that feels like two hours, but is actually 82 minutes long. Oh, and ALL the “Lost Boys” movies! Will watched a different Summer slasher, “The Final Terror” (1983) that was somehow not full of idiot victims. Then, on to “The Love Witch”. It isn’t just great to look at, it’s also a lively movie full of interesting characters who keep the story moving. It isn’t a period piece, but the look and feel makes you think of Hitchcock and his contemporaries. Even though “The Love Witc

CTS_ep 94 Street Trash
08/08/2017 Duración: 01h11minEpisode 94 is about a movie that exists in the blind spot of many horror movie fans: “Street Trash” (1987). Before getting into this one, your hosts talk about what they’ve been watching. Aside from some apes, most of what Will has been into recently could all just be called “Pardon my Murder”. You know, because all those folks in England and Scotland are so polite, but somehow have murders anyway. Richard saw “Atomic Blonde”, really enjoyed it, and spent a lot of the movie wondering what the soundtrack licensing costs were. Since the studio mics pick up the sounds of dogs and helicopters, we wonder, “why not a screaming baby?”. And then, on to “Street Trash”. It’s set in New York and of course there’s a tough cop who plays by his own rules. He’s on the case of a bunch of homeless junkyard dwellers who get ahold of some recently discovered toxic booze that melts anyone who drinks it. Richard has a similar story, but the booze never melted anyone. So, why did “Brain Damage” work for Will, but this di

CTS_ep 93 Stir of Echoes
01/08/2017 Duración: 01h17minEpisode 93 covers that one movie that had stuff in common with that other movie that came out just about a month earlier. That’s right! Stir of Echoes! Now, some people may think that a renegade bunch of film makers saw “The Sixth Sense”, got inspired to steal the idea, grabbed Kevin Bacon and got it all done in a month. Those people are called “idiots”. Not only was it in production at that same time as the other movie, but “Stir of Echoes” was actually based on a Richard Matheson book published in 1958. So there. Speaking of time travel, Richard saw Echo and the Bunnymen and Violent Femmes. It was a good show! Will finished up the “Loch Ness” series, and Jolyon saw a whole bunch of movies because Gumby didn’t get in the way. Your hosts talk about a “Hulk” movie that just sucks and a “Power Rangers” movie that goes 90 minutes before a single Power Ranger even shows up. Poor kids! Anyhoo, “Stir of Echoes” goes into a working class neighborhood of Chicago and gets some things right as well as some

CTS_ep 92 Fly vs Fly
25/07/2017 Duración: 01h22minEpisode 92 is about that rare phenomenon when a very good movie gets re-made decades later and the result is a rather different but also very good movie. We are talking about, of course, “The Fly”. The original (1958) and the re-make (1986) are both discussed. Your hosts first talk about the late, great George Romero and one of his lesser-known movies. Richard talks about a documentary about a dangerous cookbook as well as the incredible new “Wonder Woman”. Is that not enough? How about some bootleg Batmans and a Turkish Superman? Well, if that truly isn’t enough, you are welcome to some nude Jeff Goldblum, since there’s plenty of that to go around. Did he really do a whole season of “Law and Order” completely unclothed? CTS_ep 91 Forbidden Planet
18/07/2017 Duración: 01h24minEpisode 91 May surprise you a bit. Your hosts talk about “Forbidden Planet” (1956) and all the incredible efforts that went into making a standout science fiction movie that was way ahead of it’s time. “Wait, what? You JUST admitted the featured movie is science fiction, NOT horror!” you say. Well, your hosts possess that same grasp of the obvious. There will first be a discussion of “Horror/Not Horror” and what defines this beloved genre. And, if that’s not enough, “Forbidden Planet” has a murderous monster on the loose as a sub-plot…so, there’s that. Need more scares? Will tells you about a sketchy motel with a sand-filled swimming pool. Have the owners given up completely or do they have secrets buried therein? Maybe it’s best to just check out early and get back on the road! Jolyon has some less frightening stories about Gumby and Richard does his best to control a wild Chihuahua. Are you more impressed with an awesome robot or faster-than-light travel? It doesn't matter, this movie gives you b

CTS_ep 90 Ouija- Origin of Evil
11/07/2017 Duración: 01h33minBefore discussing “Ouija: Origin of Evil” (2016), Episode 90 gives you a nice rundown of 90’s horror movies your hosts enjoyed. It was a scant decade in the horror genre, but there’s enough there to impress even a skeptical horror movie fan. Sure, they had to import a fair amount from Japan, but that’s life in the Horror Business. “But what have our fair hosts watched lately?” you might ask. Well, speaking of Japan, Richard finally checked “Wild Zero” off his list. Another Jess Franco gem, “A Virgin Among the Living Dead” gets some attention as well. Will locked eyes with the Fantastic Four…not as fantastic as he had hoped! Jolyon at long last got to see “Get Out” and shares his thoughts on this modern classic. Richard and Will both imagine the misheard “Leg of Batman” with a Hitchcockian spin. This made “Lego Batman” immediately less interesting. Should “Mant” have been a real movie? Should “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992) have been the "Apocalypse Now” of Dracula movies? Was it? Listen and find

CTS_ep 89 The Church
04/07/2017 Duración: 01h05minEpisode 89 completes our scenic tour of the 1980’s horror movies. We hope you enjoy the lovely yet damaged cathedral , but warn you not to get stuck inside. There are strange things afoot as well as writing problems galore in “The Church” (1989). Before heading into "The Church", your hosts discuss a few depressing European films Jolyon has indulged in while off the leash. Jolyon also recounts one movie so scary that his young self could hardly wait for the adverts just to get a break. Speaking of commercials, Will watched “The Wizard of Oz” (1939) and it took less time, since it had no ads. He really liked it, in case you were wondering. And what about the paintings of Boris Vallejo? Will doesn’t like them. At all. Not a single one...even though they have the fittest witches you’ve ever seen. Then “The Church”. Your hosts are divided on it, but at least agree that it has fun elements, looks good and has some crazy stuff you don’t see all the time. And it has that one guy whose face really rings a

CTS_ep 88 The Lair of the White Worm
27/06/2017 Duración: 01h19minEpisode 88 is not the literary feast you might expect from one Bram Stoker. It’s more of a pickled worm feast with dancing and kilts and monobrows. Well, that’s just the party scene, but “The Lair of the White Worm” deviates from the source material in many good ways. In fact, considering that this movie is largely considered obscure, your hosts would like to let all who would listen that it’s quite good! Richard would also like to let all who would listen know that it’s exceptionally immoral to eat an octopus. They are simply too intelligent. Will wants to know if any futurists ever predicted the popularity of giant beards and backpacks. And adult coloring books. That’s not important, though. We have plastic discs containing moving pictures nowadays, and on one of those discs are Amanda Donohoe, Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi. Most importantly Amanda Donohoe. Yes, she ends up naked, painted blue and having fangs, in case you were wondering. Your checklist is almost complete! Then there’s Hugh Grant

CTS_ep 87 Dolls
20/06/2017 Duración: 01h04minEpisode 87 leaves you thinking: “It was bound to happen”. The hosts took a chance on that one movie with the poster/video box art that always seemed to promise more than it would deliver. “Dolls” (1987) is that movie. Richard never trusted it, Will and Jolyon barely remembered it, and the filmmakers seem to have made it to fulfill some obligation. None of this is to say the episode isn’t a fun listen. The hosts talk about that movie with two Tom Hardys in it. No, not “The Hardy Boys”, but “Legend” (no, not the Tom Cruise/Tim Curry one). The guys also talk about “The Girl with All the Gifts” and something Will watched with a cat inside a cat that just looks like a bath mat. Let’s just say that was bound to happen as well. So, “Dolls” (1987) comes up for discussion. Richard thinks the little girl might be Danny from “The Shining” in drag. Will says it could just be Lena Dunham. None of that matters, because there are Madonna Wannabes and bad characters at every turn. Are we supposed to like the doo

CTS_ep 86 From Beyond
13/06/2017 Duración: 01h15minEpisode 86 is about “From Beyond”(1986), which follows an assistant mad scientist and some other folks back into the lab where all kinds of bad stuff happened to the main mad scientist. Several people who were in or helped make “Re-Animator”(1985) were also in or helped make "From Beyond”, making it feel like an ideal companion piece. Before getting into all that, your hosts talk about things like imagining Ward Cleaver practicing dark science in the attic while Wally and Beaver sleep below. Also covered is Will’s Cronenberg kick, which is ongoing. Will figures that Cronenberg’s movies are mostly positive, just not usually for the main characters. And what would a pre-movie discussion discussion be like without talking about “Fantastic Magic Baby”(1975)? This brings up that fact that Will could fight a whole room full of babies. He’ll just need some time to prepare. Jolyon wonders why the new Mummy character can’t just shuffle around, strangling people now and then. Will tells about that time he fou

CTS_Derek Riggs Interview
12/06/2017 Duración: 33minYou know that thing when you turn a corner at a convention and see the booth display of a favorite artist? This happened to Richard at Phoenix Comicon and that artist was Derek Riggs! “Hmmm, that’s the guy who did all the best Iron Maiden album covers” you might be thinking. Yes, and not only that, Derek actually created Eddie, the monster from said covers. He was originally called “Electric Matthew” and had quite a different hairdo! Listen to this bonus episode and find out what famous recording studio Derek had good fortune to visit. You’ll also hear about times when Derek was kicked out of places by people who’d later regret it. You’ll find out that heavy metal albums weren’t Derek’s first covers. You could also buy his book, “Run For Cover - The Art Of Derek Riggs”, which we encourage! So, call him brilliant, call him wildly creative, but don’t call Derek Riggs “Dr. Death”! #horror #horrormovies #horrornerd #horroraddict #horrorjunkie #monsterkid #bmovie #scarymovies #monstermovie #podcast #chewi

CTS_ep 85 Re-Animator
06/06/2017 Duración: 01h18minEpisode 85 introduces you to Herbert West. Yes, that Herbert West, the one from Lovecraft’s story. Your hosts talk about “Re-Animator” (1985) and have a good time doing so! First, they talk about the events since last recording session, which include Will’s horrific bus trip from Denver to New Mexico and back. Richard took a flight to Arizona to sell stuff at Phoenix Comicon and luckily avoided the would-be gunman. Jolyon held down the fort and finished drawing Gumby comic books, just in time to have a little movie marathon. Will came back from his trip all sleep-deprived and decided to watch “Videodrome” again. The results will amaze you! This all made Richard crave a “Highlander” re-watch. And finally, your hosts talk about “Re-Animator”, in all it’s crazy greatness. This movie features a scientific madman who has a one-track mind, set on bringing the dead back to life. He pretty much succeeds, but the results are a little uneven. Just ask the professor who has to carry around his own head to get

CTS_Jon Schnepp Interview
30/05/2017 Duración: 28minWhat happens when Richard goes to Phoenix Comicon to sell artwork and toys? He meets a guy who turns out to be the guy who wrote, directed and edited “The Death of "Superman Lives": What Happened?” (2015). If you remember, Will and Richard both watched the doc and loved it! There is much crazy cool stuff that almost happened, but eventually did not. This includes Nicolas Cage playing Superman and Christopher Walken as Brainiac, with a Kevin Spacey head grafted onto him. The fun doesn’t stop there! Schnepp also designed the characters you know and love from METALOCALYPSE! Would you believe Jon nailed the look of Murderface in just one drawing? It’s true- he’s just that kind of guy! He’s also the kind of guy to edit many episodes of “Space Ghost: Coast to Coast” and to work on season 4 of “The Venture Brothers”. His credits run deep and will soon include a series called “What Happened?”, where more things that didn’t get made are explored. Now, get ready for a guy who’s busier than a one-legged, two-

CTS_ep 84 A Nightmare on Elm Street
23/05/2017 Duración: 01h24minEpisode 84 continues the march through the 80’s with a leisurely cruise down Elm Street. Even though Will has been on a real Cronenberg kick lately, he took the time to revisit Freddy and his gang of unsuspecting teens. Before really getting into it, your hosts ponder whether the stuff on the cover really needs to have anything to do with the actual story. That seems to be a “no”. That goes for both movies and comics. Jolyon has checked back in with the “Underworld” series, and (surprise!) it’s still very blue and dark. Your hosts consider an all-Orson Welles podcast, since he was, after all, a real-life monster. And then there’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984). A young Will and his friends once did a weekend marathon of Elm Street and Friday the 13th movies and lived to tell about it. This old classic holds up pretty well. Some of Wes Craven's ideas were really fresh at the time and most of the effects weren’t bad at all. Was it innovative for the 2010 re-make to make you want to go to sleep? Pe

CTS_ep 83 The Hunger
16/05/2017 Duración: 01h17minEpisode 83 brings you "the Hunger” (1983), directed by Tony Scott. Before getting into the film, your hosts talk about what else they’ve been watching. Jolyon watched 1984’s “New Tales of the Flying Fox”. You know, the one with the famous quote, “What, fertilizer? It is a cocktail of excrement.” Will has been into season 2 of a British show, set in old (olde?) times, then we learn that a ninth century Saxon king may be buried under a tennis court. The two things are unrelated. You’ll find out what movie Will describes as just “moving parts on a screen”. Speaking of screens, Richard is happy that the old 4:3 TV format is extinct. Jolyon remembers when it would reduce dialogue scenes to a pair of talking noses. The guys reflect on the old days when they could’ve been goth…but weren’t. Will says New Mexico is too hot for it, but warns that Santa Fe is full of vampires. Then the film. It has everything: the screen debut of Bauhaus, a brief appearance by a young Willem Dafoe, a whole bunch of David Bowie

CTS_ep 82 Videodrome
09/05/2017 Duración: 01h24sEpisode 82 continues the year-by-year march through the 80’s with David Cronenberg’s “Videodrome”. Was this actually from ’83 as some sources say or ’82 as other sources say? "Who’s counting?” we say! Ah, 1982, back when a young James Woods already looked 40. Those kind of looks make it easy to be both funny and sleazy. You know what else is funny? Jolyon’s DVD copy of “Videodrome” that is packaged to look just like a Betamax videotape! Before the discussion of reality vs. hallucination gets underway, Will asks the age-old question “What if a slasher movie had a bear in it?” Well, it would be “Grizzly” (1976) and you’d want to destroy it with a rocket-launcher! With a little help, Richard notices that the fantastic world of “Videodrome” is now our mundane reality, with screens full of extreme content virtually everywhere. And Will wonders if these young people will ever get out of their phones long enough to do drugs and have sex. You know, like they did in the bad old days when there were only lik

CTS_ep 81 Scanners
02/05/2017 Duración: 01h05sEpisode 81 starts a year-by-year march through the decade of the 1980’s with David Cronenberg’s “Scanners”. Before getting into the 1981 classic, your hosts discuss some recent tweets we received from filmmaker Christian Stella, who had additional info on “The Battery” (2012). We also discuss why Adam Driver hasn’t yet played Joey Ramone in a Ramones biopic. Let’s face the inevitable, shall we, Adam? And who were the other bands considered for “Rock ’n’ Roll High School”? Wikipedia might help solve that mystery! Jolyon barely gets started with his “recently watched” list and the conversation sidetracks to Molly Ringworm and Orson Welles. By the way, was Orson Welles EVER honest? Experts think not. Did you know there are Shakespearean dick jokes? “But, but, he wasn’t even American” you say. Welcome to harsh reality! Speaking of which, there was a 1979 TV show called “Salvage 1”. It starred Andy Griffith as a junkyard owner who built a junk rocket for salvaging space junk. How did that fail to lau

CTS_ep 80 The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue
25/04/2017 Duración: 01h19minEpisode 80 takes you to the far away land of England. Or Spain. Or Italy…. maybe all of the aforementioned combined. No matter, your hosts have a few things to discuss first. First, can your low-budget movie run solely on pizza? And then, what about Telly Savalas and his penchant for lollipops? He seems to have them a lot, even when playing The Devil. But at least he’s not mad about apples! Will has binged on MST3K (the new one) and reports back. And then a word about streaking. It happens in the opening sequence of the featured movie and we suppose it to be a protest. Among several protests. Will knew some people who would streak for fun. Well, fun followed by shame and embarrassment when a hotel exit isn’t really an exit. Richard has a story as well, so listen to hear it! We contemplate what “Murder Rock” might be. Jolyon fills us all in on the numerous titles of “Manchester Morgue”…there are at least 15. Oh, and btw- Jolyon did identify the correct Tony (Musante). So, dear listeners, come o

CTS_ep 79 The Battery
18/04/2017 Duración: 59minEpisode 79 is about a 2012 independent zombie film called “The Battery”. This film was written and directed by Jeremy Gardner, who also stars as Ben. Shudder subscribers will already have access to this, but Amazon has it as a rental as well. Richard and Will both loved it! As you get into the episode, you’ll notice the absence of Jolyon’s dulcet tones. That’s right, he’s off drawing Gumby and Tales from the Crypt, which the world really needs right now. Will has been watching “The Vampire Diaries” for some reason. It’s a show that goes crazy and blows storytelling opportunities right and left. And don’t get Will started on Robert Stack’s delivery or reenactment actor’s bad Cockney accents in “Unsolved Mysteries”. Richard watched the 1977 Japanese movie “House”. Is it total nonsense? Is it horror? Well, let’s just say a girl gets eaten by a piano. And there’s a witch. Horror. Did “The Battery” director Jeremy Gardner have to do full frontal nudity as a trade to get actor Adam Cronheim to spank i

CTS_ep 78 Get Out
11/04/2017 Duración: 01h22minEpisode 78 takes a weekend trip to explore all the complicated issues surrounding race relations in modern society. Well, at least as far as your can get in a horror movie where the kind liberal characters are the monsters. “Get Out”(2017) has a super tight script that doesn’t lose your interest for a minute or waste your time on the same old tropes delivered in the same old ways. Speaking of color, Jolyon has the week dedicated to drawing a green guy named “Gumby”, so it’s up to Will and Richard to hold down the fort. Make no mistake, the guys aren’t operating under the foolish notion that they’ll actually figure it all out, but promise to keep open minds and just be good people. Will talks about that time he and some friends terrified a young cashier in Iowa by just looking a little different. Richard points out that he doesn’t need TSA agent Rod to like him in order to like Rod. But then, Richard does like bocce ball after all, so he might just be "one of them”. Would Duran Duran play a vintage foo
