  • 195: Fri-Date | Open Loop Syndrome

    15/11/2019 Duración: 32min

Today’s Topic: Learning to work together Kim says I have a disease called Open Loop Syndrome. Anyone who has read the book Getting Things Done by Robert Allen will know his system for checking items off your list so they don’t pop up in your brain all the time and stop you from focusing. Kim agrees that this is a good system for managing tasks and helps us to be more productive but says that sometimes we need to sit with bigger decisions for a while so we can properly think them through. I do have a tendency to miss some steps in a task because I’m determined to get it off my plate. We’re always looking to take working together, living together, playing together, having a family together and building businesses together to the next level. But we're two different people with two different brains and two different astrological signs so that means that we have to come up with ways of working that suit us both. We don't try to make each other feel wrong, even if we passionately disagree with something. We look fo

Resources: The Reaching Beyond Experience mastermind ssa.gov Mastermind: workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind Connect with us on Instagram: @kimmurgatroyd | @robmurgatroyd A few years ago Kyle Depiesse logged on to the Social Security website and saw that he had earned a little over $1 million. He thought that was funny because he didn’t really have much to show for it. He asked his wife for her social security number and saw that she had earned about the same amount. So together they had about $2 million in lifetime earnings but they were $380,000 in debt. The debt wasn’t crippling, nor was it largely personal debt - most of it was their mortgage. But Kyle felt embarrassed and angry and resolved to tackle their finances differently from that moment on. In 38 months the debt was gone and Kyle and his wife were able to focus on investing for their future. In This Conversation We Cover:  [4:21] Kyle’s blue-collar upbringing and the beliefs he learnt about money [6:56] Choosing new influences to change th

  • 193: Fri-Date | Fasting, Gut Health and Bone Broth

    08/11/2019 Duración: 26min

Today’s Topic: Eating for health from the inside out Kim and I have been guinea pigs for a lot of different diets. Right now I eat keto style and fast for 16 hours a day whereas Kim fasts for 24 hours once every week or two. In this episode we talk about the benefits of fasting (it’s great for gut health and losing body fat) plus Kim tells us her views on bacon - particularly the non-organic kind. We also cover Chalene Johnson’s cloud bread (so good!) and talk about the new products from Kim’s company that she’s absolutely obsessed with. One of them is a collagen bone broth with extra vitamin C. Kim’s been making bone broth once a week for years, and it’s such a pain in the ass to make. First you have source organic, non-GMO bones and then it’s two days of cooking and you have to strain it, which gets kind of messy. So Kim’s super happy about being able to buy quality bone broth. And, special offer! Whatever kind of diet you follow, Kim would love to create a personalized supplement protocol for you. You can

  • 191: Fri-Date | Is Where You Live a Default Decision?

    01/11/2019 Duración: 16min

Today’s Topic: Changing your physical location When you're in familiar environments, your brain doesn't have to do a whole lot of work. You’re used to your surroundings so your senses aren't really alive to new things coming at you. We just moved to Southern California, and everything is different. It got me thinking that there's probably some listeners that are hearing their higher self calling them to go somewhere else.  And I would encourage you to do that, even if it seems overwhelming and difficult and you have to move kids, your dog, etc. Changing locations is a great opportunity to reset, reboot and participate in your life differently than you were doing it in the familiar environment, particularly if it’s a default decision, like still living where you grew up. Your environment affects everything including how you feel about yourself, how you show up in the world, your health, your education and your relationships. There’s no perfect place - there’s always trade-offs. But if you think that you need m

  • 190: Fri-Date | Shutting Down My Inner Diva

    28/10/2019 Duración: 13min

Today’s Topic: 10 lessons from traveling around Europe We just returned from four months of traveling around Europe. These are the top 10 things I learnt.  1. Your family gets closer You’re forced to be together every day so you learn how to work with each other better.  2. You need to be flexible I can be a bit of a diva and I like nice hotels but when you’re traveling for months you need to be flexible unless you have a boatload of money. Our bed in Montenegro wasn’t that comfortable but the trade-off is that we got to see Montenegro.  3. 100 steps is another trade-off but it leads to the Duomo We had to climb a lot of steps in Europe. Sometimes I was carrying a stroller and/or grocery bags. Sometimes I’d had a couple of glasses of wine. But getting to the top usually made it worth it. For instance in Florence, Italy we were able to see the Duomo from our deck.  4. Your communication skills are forced to improve When you're in a new location where you don't know anybody and you don't speak the language, you

  • 189: Fri-Date | We’re California People Now

    25/10/2019 Duración: 21min

Today’s Topic:  Letting the how reveal itself  In this episode, Kim and I are talking about working out exactly what you want and letting the how reveal itself. We’ve just moved to Southern California, and that’s been our dream for a long time. If we go back to when we weren’t making any progress, it’s because we were firmly based in what we thought the how would be - opening and selling 10 chiropractic clinics. And then one day, I heard somewhere that you should write the story of what you want your life to look like and read it every day before you go to bed. I started doing that, and everything started to fall into place. The goal was to live in California so I started to sit down and think about what it would be like to live here. Waking up, walking Sophia to school, having 365 days a year where Kim and I can have coffee outside, working for a few hours, going to the beach, surfing, going on family bicycle rides and sharing a bottle of wine while watching the sunset, All those things I imagined while we w

  • 187: Fri-Date | Throwing Your Cappuccino at the Universe

    18/10/2019 Duración: 19min

Today’s Topic: Celebrating small wins and moving past setbacks Sometimes we humans get so caught up in the process of achieving our goals that we don't celebrate the small wins along the way. We also have a tendency to get caught up in setbacks and drama.  One year we were in Italy but, instead of enjoying our break, in the evenings I was reviewing reports from the chiropractic clinic and Kim was doing the billing. We were mad at whatever fire was happening back in Atlanta, and we weren't able to truly appreciate and celebrate what we did do well that year that led to us being able to even have the trip to Italy. As we're moving into the last quarter of 2019, sit down with your significant other and think about the breaks you would love to carve into 2020. There's never a time when you're done with all the things you have to do. So make a decision and build in those breaks. Right now we have our mastermind members en route to Florence. What we’ve designed for them is exactly perfect for what they should be do

  • 185: Fri-Date | Stupid Idea Time

    11/10/2019 Duración: 27min

Today’s Topic: What we’ve learnt in the last 15 years Today we’re backing it up to when Kim and I first met 15 years ago. I was a chiropractor in a small town outside of Atlanta working six days a week and hating it. I auditioned for a TV show in LA. I got the part but, even though my dream was to live on the West Coast, I didn’t take it because I was in love with Kim (we weren’t even dating yet!) So now we are nine days away from landing in LA and heading to our house in Hermosa.  I wanted to get out of the chiropractic business so I hired this coach who said, okay, you want to retire. So why don't you open 10 offices over the next 10 years, sell them for X amount of dollars and then you can have that in the bank and live off that money? That's what this guy did. And it could be a great plan for somebody, but for someone that hates the one office that they have, having 10 of them just seems like crazy pants. So in some ways the coach provided a solution within the framework in which I provided but where I th

    04/10/2019 Duración: 21min

Today’s Topic: Our new mastermind   Since we’ve been on our adventure in Europe, we've had a lot of people messaging us because they love watching what we've been able to build for ourselves.   This podcast is all about helping people who have a dream, but they're a little bit muddy on how to execute. Everyone can use a little bit of help, accountability and some shortcuts based on the long list of mistakes that we've made.   We know that everyone can’t join the Work Hard Play Hard in-person mastermind right now, so we’ve decided to create a virtual mastermind as well. It’s a 90-day commitment starting on November 1. It includes three Push Planner journals (created by Chalene Johnson). The Push Planner is the planner I’ve used to literally double our income, launch this podcast, land in the top 100 on iTunes and launch the Work Hard Play Hard in-person mastermind. We’ll also use Robert Allen’s Getting Things Done system to create something that he calls a mind like water. This enables you to go throughout you

His parents escaped apartheid in South Africa and headed for the sunny shores of Australia, and that’s where Emile was born. After a successful modeling career in Australia and in Asia, he headed to LA. Unfortunately that’s when the recession hit. Emile found himself working three jobs and his car was repossessed. Emile decided to try New York and found that his ‘ethnically ambiguous’ look was a better fit for the market there. Then a friend made it big in Bollywood, invited Emile over, and he ended up staying for two years. After exhausting himself modeling in Australia again (he had four days off in a year!), Emile became a motivational coach and speaker and moved to Bali. He now runs transformational retreats with fellow coach and entrepreneur, Joel Brown.   In This

    27/09/2019 Duración: 28min

Today’s Topic: Hedonic adaptation    Today our friends from Atlanta, Chris and Matt, join us on the podcast. They’ve been staying with us this week in Florence so we wanted to ask them what they’re loving about Italy. Their top takeaway is the value of slowing down and appreciating the bigger picture.    We’re really enjoying connecting with them on a deeper level, which you get to do when you have a lot of time to spend with people. One thing that we’ve been discussing a lot this week is hedonic adaptation. This means that humans in general have a way of adapting to their environment, so that eventually something new, whether it’s good or bad, just becomes the norm. So if you buy the humongous house, within a couple months it's just your home. If you buy the fancy sports car, at some point it just becomes your car and the means by which you get to work.   There are some things where the novelty never wears off and we never truly just take it for granted like a great conversation, a fantastic bottle of wine,

    20/09/2019 Duración: 28min

Today’s Topic: Transitions in life   We're less than 30 days away from moving from this beautiful life in Italy to Southern California. Although we’re excited about the move, we also love the life we’ve created here, so it’s going to be a big transition. We love that here nobody's saying, “Would you like fries with that?” The other day Kim was at the deli and the guy said, “I want you to taste something. I've been cooking this ham for 40 hours.” It was the most amazing ham Kim had ever tasted and it wasn't an upsell, he wanted to share it because he was proud of it.   We’re at the point in the transition where it’s starting to get a bit hard. Fun fact: the cost of living in SoCal is about twice as much as in Italy. Sophia will have to go to a new school, we’ll have to make new friends, and we have to rent a house. We're doing calls with potential landlords and they're asking, “Now, what is this Work Hard Play Hard business you have? I don't need you to be having all these parties in the house.” We’re willing
